About the Pastor

Pastor Vacancy & Call
Paul Winterstein has been contracted to be our vacancy pastor. He will be out of town July 30 through August 6. In most months, he will preach for one service and arrange for speakers for the other services. Andrew Potsko will preach two Sundays per month and lead the Adult Bible Class prior to the service each Sunday.

Survey forms to be completed by each member will be available online or in your mailbox at church. One is to be completed by each member and returned to Esther Reese or placed in the basket provided in the foyer. These need to be returned by August 26th. This survey allows you to indicate the qualities you think are most important in our call for a pastor. This information will be used by the Call Committee and the District as they look for possible candidates.

Members are encouraged to submit names to Esther Reese of pastors that they think we should consider as potential candidates in the call process. Please submit names by August 26th.

Please call Esther Reese or any deacon (see below) if you have questions about this procedure.

Pastoral Care During Vacancy
In addition to contacting Paul Winterstein (see below), you can also contact the church office (206-324-1066), Esther Reese (206-632-6544) or any other deacon. The deacons are Karl Brunner, Jim (Mike) Courtney, Robert Heckel, Tim Klick, Leroy Lehner, and Megan Bernhardt from the Chapel. Mark Meyer was elected as a deacon in Sunday’s meeting.

Stacy’s office hours as of July 29th will be: Tuesday-Friday 9:30am – 2:30pm

At the times when no one is in the office, you can leave a message there. I’ll pick them up periodically. You can also call a Deacon.

Esther Reese,
Trinity Board of Deacons

About Paul Winterstein
Pastor Paul Winterstein is a native of northwest Washington, having been born in Auburn. The son of a pastor, he spent about half of his childhood in Auburn and spent the other half of childhood in southern Idaho when his father took a call to the little town of New Plymouth.

He attended Concordia College, Portland; Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne; and was graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 1967.

Since leaving the seminary, he has served parishes in Lebanon, OR, 1967-74; Baltimore, MD, 1974-86; and Calvary, Seattle, from 1986 to the present.

He is married to Boots (Spannaus), and has three adult children—two boys and a girl, in that birth order. The oldest and youngest of them live on the east coast—western North Carolina and Boston. The middle child is moving to New Mexico, where he will be married in early August.

Professionally, his interests lie in two main areas. Care for people, especially those in distress, has been his interest throughout his ministry. Secondly, having enjoyed studying Biblical Greek, he still finds study of the New Testament fascinating.

You may contact him at his office, 206-937-6590, or his home, 206-762-1362.

News and Notes

Thank You Pastor Don & Lois!
I would like to extend a personal thank you to them for all of the support they gave to me in my loss of Dale. Pastor spent time up at the hospital when I am so sure that he would have rather been home with his family.

I was very appreciative that he was there. Also, he allowed Dale to be his friend and accompany him on his many trips to visit shut ins. Dale looked forward to those trips.

I appreciated when Pastor came to the hospital when a friend of Esther's and mine was dying. He had a wonderful prayer for the family and us and made it so personal when he didn't even know them. He has a special talent for impromptu prayer for all sorts of occasions!

I thank him for...

  • Introducing Haugen liturgy and variety in services.
  • Preaching the Word faithfully and encouraging our walk with Jesus and stretching our comfort zone.
  • Promoting the fellowship and services with Beacon and The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd as well as the relationship with Concordia School and the Chapel.
  • Making baptisms special for the family.
  • Managing to fix something that I had no clue about (circuit breakers, alarm batteries, etc.) or mopping up the water when the drain got plugged.
  • Planting dahlias by the fence and iris -- not sure about the squirrels!
  • Not gloating when the Ducks beat the Huskies.

Lois was a huge help in cleaning the kitchen and bathroom when we had short notice to get the parsonage ready for Andrew to move in.

Other appreciations:

  • Helping with work parties--look out weeds.
  • Making the Advent wreath. Altar duty. Introducing Jennifer Nehr to Trinity and singing in the choir.
  • Great stories at coffee hour.

You get the idea...they will be missed.

I thank Pastor Don for his wise counsel in helping prepare Justin and I for our wedding… His gracious support and visit when I lost my brother and Dad… His terrific wit and wonderful sermons… I thank Lois for being a wonderful caretaker for my kids — always willing to take them on so I could catch a minute. I thank them both for creating a church home that I finally felt at home in!

Nancy’s Nicaragua Trip
To my friends at Trinity...Thanks so much for supporting the children of Nicaragua through Humble Hearts and my trip.

It was a wonderful time there again. Several trips were made to outlying villages from Diriamba, where we stayed. Four Nica dentists joined us to work and volunteer their time: a new concept for them. They want to continue to help with the children at Leyla's daycare.

At Los Dios, one of the villages, we treated many children and some adults and shared the Gospel message via a Spanish booklet about Jesus's life and death and resurrection. One little 9- or 10- year-old girl read the booklet with my friend Terri and preceded to read to the other children around her. She wore a little yellow sundress, and, when our van left her village, she followed us above on a small ridge, running after us, waving all the way!

Nicaragua celebrates their independence in July like we do. On the 4th, the electricity went out while we were having dinner (it goes out alot unexpectedly recently), and Jimmy our host said, "Go outside and see the stars! No lights, bright stars!" So, we did. The big dipper is upside down! We watched for some time, and, about the time we decided to head in for sleep, a very large falling star occurred, going across the horizon! Simply beautiful!!

I have photos/slide show to share on a Sunday.

Please pray for the Holy Spirit to nourish and guide these children and people of Nicaragua in body and soul.

In Christ's name,
Nancy Gregory

Serving God & the People of the City

And this is our city. Or is it? How many of us actually live in Seattle? How many of us frequent the restaurants, bars, beauty salons, coffee shops, and parks? How many of us have walked down Broadway… past the Taco Bell, QFC, Starbucks, the post office, the Red Light? How many of us know what’s going on in it? And see what’s going on? How many of us know where to take people who are new in town? And, how can we really serve this city if we do not know it?

I propose… Nay, I challenge thee: Spend some time on Capitol Hill this month. Play a game of chess Wednesday nights on a larger-than-life board in Cal Anderson Park. Sit down and read the Capitol Hill Times as you sip your chai tea latte at Vivace’s. Enjoy the sights and sounds of Broadway as you sample some of the tasty wines at Café Septieme. Strike up a conversation with someone in line at the Post Office… just as long as you do something to get to know this city again. For, if we want to do the ministry of Christ, we need to be incarnational, we need to be present.

Chapel Update
We’ve been enjoying worship outside this summer on the patio. And, despite many of the students heading home for break, we’ve had a number of returning visitors. We’re looking forward to the coming year, especially since we’ll be starting with a core group of leaders who have been with us throughout last year, and we have my wife, who will be a great addition to the ministry.

Since things are slower around the Chapel, we have rewritten the job description of the Director of Student Ministries to include grant writing for different projects and events at the Chapel. Namely, I’ve been trying to raise support for our mission trip to Ghana during Spring Break of ‘08. So, pleased keep these things in your prayers as we continue a third year of ministry here at the Chapel.

Meyer Minutes
Pastor Don and his family have been a tremendous support to Concordia. This ministry would not be sharing the love of Christ on a daily basis without the dedication of many that, like them, are part of the puzzle. I am personally grateful to have had time with Don on a personal level, to work and talk about the leadership aspect of Concordia. I believe that we make plans and God leads our steps; so, as He leads this step, may everyone understand the true blessing this man and family have been to Concordia. Our prayers are with you, and California is in for a new adventure.

In Him,
Dave
