From the Pastor

Roll Away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The stone that keeps me in—
Keeps me down
Keeps me dead inside
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The guilt that steals my soul—
Steals my joy
Steals my breath
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The fear that strangles me—
Strangles my laughter
Strangles my imagination
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The timidity that reigns in me—
Reins in my mind
Rains on my potential parade
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The powers that pommel me
Pommel me with perilous doubt
Pommel me with festering perfidy
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The blindness that darkens me
Darkens life
Darkens even my death
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The hopelessness that pursues me
Pursues my dreamsPursues my humanity
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The rejection that assails me—
Assails me from withoutAssails me even from within
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The commandment that condemns me—
Condemns my presentCondemns my eternity
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
The sign that identifies me—
Identifies me as worthlessIdentifies me as mirthless
Roll away, Lord, Roll away Lord
Roll away

Roll away, Lord, Roll away
Lord Roll away
Anything but you
Anyone but you
Any other purpose
Than praising you

Roll away, Roll Away, Roll away. Lord
And I will be free.

Blessings,
Pastor Don

Focus on New Members

Meet new members Sean and Dawn Gill!

Originally from Ontario, Canada, pursuit of the academic life brought Sean and Dawn to the Seattle area.

Sean is a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Washington, studying lung disease.

Dawn is a full-time PhD student studying physical activity and falling in older populations as well as epidemiology. She is also a Research Coordinator at the UW. Sean discovered Trinity on a brief trip to Seattle several months ago, and both he and Dawn appreciate the friendliness of the church and Pastor Schatz’s leadership.

If there is ever a medical emergency, this couple is the one to call! Not only are they in the medical research field, but they met while serving individually as part of the Student Emergency Response Team at their university.

While they do miss their family and friends from Canada as well as tasty Tim Horton’s coffee, they are certainly enjoying the beauty and variety of the Pacific Northwest.

Chapel on the Ave

Fifty-four days until I give up my life of unadulterated bachelorhood. Fifty-four days before I am shackled to that great “ball and chain.” Fifty-four days before I am faced with every man’s worst fear… the nagging mother-in-law. Fifty-four days until my life of independence is morphed into a surreptitious exchange of interdependency.

Yes. I am getting married.

I really don’t have a clue what I’m getting myself into, but, to tell you the truth, I am not scared one bit because I am stepping into this with my best friend.

“Ah, hope springs eternal,” some of you may say. Maybe some of you are a little jaded by marriage or by a second marriage, maybe even a third. Maybe you might tell me that the person I marry in fifty-four days will one day wake up, years from now, and look quite different: some wrinkles, some sour looks, some “issues.” Issues that will ultimately lead to fear, doubt, jealousy, anger, temptation, and God knows where those might lead to, maybe a bitter end.

I would say your concerns are worthily noted, except for one thing: our commitment. Not to love or even to God. For God knows how many of his faithful have struggled. It is our commitment to maintenance. That every day we fight tooth and nail to forgive, to understand and to become better people for each other. We are not in the business of breaking down walls, but to remove every stone that would be set up even to begin them.

May God sustain our will and yours, in every relationship, including ours to His.

Meyer Minutes
Transformed was the word of the week a few days ago. I believe that we all transform throughout life with help from others and from Him.

Maybe you have noticed some signs around the property that mention “land use.” Yes, our facility is being transformed. The process that started last summer with the vote by the governing churches to sell a portion of the property is moving forward. The signs indicate that it is in the hands of the city, and, from there, it continues to transform into something great.

This should also remind us that as God works in our lives we are continually being transformed. What will the final piece look like? What will the facility here look like? What will our lives transform to? What will the lives of our kids look like?

These are all questions that are answered by Him and by our trust in Him. Which reminds me, the theme for last week was trust.

In Him,
Dave

Lutheran Community Services NorthWest

May is National Foster Care Month
Lutheran Community Services provides nurturing foster homes for abused and neglected children and refugee and immigrant youth. Make a difference in the life of a child. Here are some ideas:

  • Become a foster parent
  • Support a foster family in your community or your congregation
  • Provide respite care
  • Tutor a foster child
  • Provide transportation for visits
  • Contribute financially to programs
  • Provide childcare during foster parent trainings or meetings

To find out how you can transform a child’s future, please call (206) 694-5700, visit www.lcsnw.org or email sjohnson@lcsnw.org.

ICCS
ICCS is a program of Lutheran Community Services providing services to refugees and immigrants. The staff of ICCS includes cross-cultural counselors, a psychiatrist, program assistant, and teachers. Call (206) 694-5797 or e-mail ncherepnina@lcsnw.org for more information.

Multicultural Community Services is currently resettling 25-30 refugees a month in the Puget Sound Region. Part of our services is helping refugees to furnish a home. We are in desperate need of usable household items – especially beds (box springs & mattresses, but not king size because they do not fit into small apartments), kitchen pots & pans, and dishes. Please call Jan Stephens at (206) 694-5785 to arrange for pickup.
